Our Products - Natural Cosmetics

The Swazi Secrets philosophy is Pure, Simple, Natural. And that means the secret of the product is in its natural ingredients, sourced as locally as possible. We currently produce our own marula, ximenia and trichilia oil and buy mongongo oil and shea butter from partner organisations with a similar approach to ours.

We strive to keep our formulations pure and simple, so you don¡¯t need a chemistry degree to check if they are truly natural C just read the ingredients lists.

What is soap?

Soap is traditionally made by adding lye to fat or oil C a process called saponification. This results in salts of fatty acids which clean by removing the fat that surrounds dirt on our skin, thus enabling water to rinse it off. A good soap meets 2 criteria: a) it is made from good quality oil of plant origin and b) the oil content is so high that not all of it is saponified, leaving excess to renourish the skin after washing. All Swazi Secrets soaps are very rich in plant-origin oils, and you will feel it on your skin.

Packaging materials and their environmental impact

All packaging puts a load on the environment C through its production and its disposal. But we cannot do without it, so we try do cause the least possible impact:

  • As little as possible: Swazi Secrets have strictly one layer of packaging C a bottle or tube, but no box around it. To protect the products on their way to the retailer, they are boxed in multiples in cardboard boxes, made from recycled paper as much as possible (in a region where far less waste is produced than in the developed world, recycled material is not always available). At the moment, we apply labels to the containers, but as demand for Swazi Secrets grows, we hope to achieve sufficient volumes to print directly on the tubes and bottles, reducing the packaging material further.
  • Choice of least harmful material for each purpose: We opted for plastic packaging over glass due to the lower weight and volume of plastic and the risk of waste from breakage of glass bottles during their journey around the world to you. All materials are recyclable, provided your country or area has a functioning plastic recycling system. Pure oil goes into PET-G bottles which provide sufficient protection for their valuable content. For the body lotion, HDPE is sufficient and is considered to have a lighter environmental footprint than PET. Exfoliator and lip balm come in LDPE tubes, which reduce contact between hands and contents, thus keeping the product fresh for longer once opened. Caps and lids are polypropylene (tube lids), ABS (bottle cap inner) and styrene (green bottle cap ring). We could not find a natural material that would safely seal the containers, so chose them for function and looks.
  • Considering product life-time impact: If you use Swazi Secrets Marula Oil daily, your packaging waste from it will be one bottle and lid in 1-3 months. This is very different from eating a plastic-packed yoghurt each day or buying a soft drink in a non-returnable PET bottle (even if you reuse it a few times).
  • Re-use: The outer ring of the bottle lids detaches with a little pressure and makes a small but quite pretty serviette ring.

We are constantly striving for improvements C if you have any suggestions or insights on how we can improve Swazi Secrets packaging in terms of environmental impact or user-friendliness, please contact us.
